International migration statistics: challenges, recent improvements, and possible solutions.

2020 – 2024 | H2020

Summary:

Existing international migration statistics are incomplete, inadequate and to a large extent do not correspond to the needs of researchers and policymakers. In this project, we aim at conducting a comprehensive study to evaluate international migration data platforms to conceptualise the gaps and seek solutions to improve the data quality. We assess the gaps from the perspective of the user and the data provider and investigate the potentials the new data sources (e.g., big data) to complement traditional statistics. Additionally, we investigate the extent to which new innovative data is currently used by National Statistical Institutions (NSI). The project is based on an extensive literature review of the topic, key expert insights from over 30 NSIs around the world and testing new methods for extracting data from indirect sources. The research will also try to determine the place of migration in global political agendas.
