Summary:

In this chapter we define our central concept of ‘precarious employment’ and describe a conceptual model where we link precarious employment to working conditions, work content and the health and well-being of employees. Next, we describe how we have operationalised precarious employment on the basis of the EWCS 2015 data, and we discuss the results of our analyses. We focus on the distribution of precarious employment in Belgium and the relationship between (a) precarious work and organisational characteristics and (b) demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of employees. Then we look at the link between precarious jobs and working conditions and job content. Finally, we discuss the relationship of precarious work with indicators on health and well-being.
